I am travelling from Siena to Avignon and would like to stop overnight somewhere on the way. Genova looks about half way through but I don't want to go into a city. Does anyone have a suggestion of great village or small town to stop in over night?

There is a suburb of Genoa called Nervi and it has the most wonderful hotel there called the Villa Pagoda. It was an old embassy and has the best food and is virtually right on the Promenade, it has private access. Nervi is a very upmarket part of Genoa with large villas and beautiful gardens quite removed from the city. The hotel is walking distance from the station and most of the trains seem to stop there.
