Seems a lot of you think that 3-4 days is pleanty in the Lake Como area. I have a week, arriving in Milan. Where else would you suggest, returning back out of Milan. Have been to Venice/Florence/Rome only.
Answered in your other Thread.
Pure magic. Varenna or Bellagio are great bases on lake Como. Lake Maggie's is also beautiful but a little quieter.
how about a few days in Verona?
What about visiting the Cinque area a day outside Milan and then head to Como Lakes area? With 7 days is there winery area anywhere outside Milan for day trip?
Thanks for comments. Flying into Milan and think may look around there a day Should we take day out to Cinque T areas before going up to lake Como area? Day trip to Dolomites? Is that only via car?
Would like to use trains as much as possible
Pam, With only a week, I wouldn't bother spending a day in Milan unless there's something there you specifically want to see (ie: "The Last Supper"). Visiting the Cinque Terre as a day trip isn't "ideal" as it doesn't allow time to see much or really enjoy the area. As I recall, the travel time from Milan to Monterosso is a minimum of ~3 hours each way. A day trip to the Dolomites will also be a bit challenging, depending on exactly which place you want to visit. The trip from Milan to Bolzano (for example) is ~3.5 hours each way. If you want to visit Castelrotto, you can add about an hour for the Bus. Again, not ideal for a day trip. I wouldn't bother with a car due to the "issues" involved, and also everywhere you want to visit is easily accessible by train or Bus. Do you have a copy of the Italy 2012 Guidebook? It has an enormous wealth of information that will help you to work out the details. Cheers!
Suggestions for hotels in Lake Como area?
Still looking for options if I don't go to Cinque T from Milan and only go to Como area. Checking out Bergamo and Verona
Do you have the RS Italy book? It's got loads of lodging recommendations for Lake Como. He doesn't cover Bergamo, though.
