Suggestions for a smaller town near Rome to visit

My husband and I found super cheap tickets to Rome for the first week of March- we’d like to get away from the large city and land somewhere wonderful for our week- thinking a 1-2 hr train ride away.
Any suggestions??

orvieto for sure, Another world compared to Rome. Also consider Ostia. we stayed there for 3 days before going into rome. extremely close to fiumacino airport. great ruins, great seaside, nice little village and a short -although semi dangerous (lots of pickpockets)- trainride to Rome.

Orvieto is not only beautiful, it has a lot of quality sights. Rick covers it in his guide to Italy. I have the impression it's a popular weekend getaway for Romans (though I don't know about March), so you may find it busier on the weekends than midweek; it is definitely not undiscovered. It seems to have its share of good restaurants (the Italian visitors would insist on quality); for a stay of a week, it would definitely be worth doing a bit of pre-trip research on that topic.

We enjoyed staying in quiet little Chiusi and doing day trips to Orvieto and Cortona and other busy towns via train.
