Suggestions for a private guide at the Vatican

We have very limited time in Rome this trip. Only three days and we plan a trip to Pompeii.

Last time on a tour, they rushed me through the Vatican museum, so I saw little to nothing. My wife is with me and I want to find a good private guide for our trip. Any suggestions would be appreciated?

  1. How much time should we allocate? Half a day, a whole day?
  2. What would you expect the cost to be ball park?
  3. What is considered a proper tip for the guide?

Ballpark cost will be Euro 55 per hour. Contact Sonia Tavoletta soniatav@alice.it. She's done a great job for us in Ancient Rome and I am quite certain she does the Vatican as well. You could also try Tony Polzer at Three Millennia but I think he is more expensive. Sonia will recommend someone reliable if she is not able to help you. Allow 3 hours, at least. No tip if you hire a private guide.

What other tours does she do besides the Vatican? What did you give her for a tip?

If you hire a private guide a tip is not necessary. The tip is included in the price.

FYI . . . A lady from France I spoke w/says European restaurants loooove to see Americans b/c we tip so well. She said in Europe it is not necessary to tip like we do in the States. If we want to tip, just leave a Euro.

Just my 2 cents worth. ;-)

Others have replied and said the same. I don't want to be rude, but heard in restaurants they get paid well. A small tip is fine, but not to go overboard! I appreciate the replay very much! Taxi's they say round up.

What about someone that carries your bags to the room?

Laurel, I appreciate the links. I contacted both and we will see how it fares.

Again thank you!

Dan,
Sonia also does Colosseo, Palatino, Forum, San Clemente, act. Most guides have to be able to do everything.... hope one of them works out. Let me know!
