suggestions for 2 days travel with 3yr old

Where would you suggest we travel with our 3 year old? We will be flying into Rome and will have 2 days/nights to ourselves before continuing on to Umbria to meet family for a week. Would you stay in Rome? if yes, where? Other suggestions that might suit our timeframe?

I am no expert on travel with a 3 year old in Italy, but there's a good website you might consult for ideas: CiaoBambino. It covers a great deal of Europe, but there's an Italy blog within. Worth a look for child friendly sites throughout Italy.

My suggestion? Go where YOU want to, and then research child friendly accomodations in the area. We have taken our children (2 under 3) to Edinburgh, Wales, St. Andrews, London, Oxford and are taking them to Siena this fall. My sister took her child to Venice and had a wonderful experience. DeliciousBaby has a lot of travel with kiddos information in it. If you choose to stay in Rome, Palatine Hill and the Forum would be good places to explore. The Vatican Museum was very crowded and not somewhere my little ones would tolerate well, but the plaza outside the Vatican would be a place they would enjoy. Those ubiquitous bus tours that you see in major cities are not something I would have recommended before having kids, until I discovered that my kids will sack out for their afternoon naps while my husband and I get oriented to the city and take in the sites. We have tended to have better luck with B&Bs than big hotels, but be up front when you contact them and they will tell you whether they can accomodate you. We travel at a different pace now than we did before we had kids, but we still have had some really fabulous European vacations with them in tow. And yes, we still travel with only carry-on luggage!

I would go to Tuscany! Very family friendly and lots of room to run and explore. Our 4-yr-old goes everywhere with us so i think your child will enjoy the adventure with you wherever you go.
