Looking for a place that is interesting outside of Rome no more than 2 hours by train or bus. We have done Florence twice, Siena, Venice, Milan, and Rome.. A quaint small town or by water would be nice, we'll be flying back to the US from there. We'll have 2 to 4 days to stay somewhere just not sure where to do.

James, one clear choice is Orvieto, in Umbria, about 70 minutes by train from Rome. An ancient hill town with Umbrian and Etruscan roots. Lots to do there, various sites underground (ancient caves, wells,, etc.), an absolutely gorgeous Duomo, inside and out. Great food, good choice of excellent restaurants. Excellent wine too, known for Orvieto Classico (a white). Wineries out of town, but nearby. Old town is great for wandering in the evening. A nice change of pace from the bigger cities, filled with tourists. There is a funicular that takes you from the train up to the old town.

James,
You may consider the quaint small beach town of Sperlonga for a couple days. It's a short train ride from Roma Termini. It's between Rome and Naples. Our daughter was there last year. The view of the Tyrrhenian Sea is exquisite. She has a friend who lives south of Rome and it's a favorite place for a getaway to "La Dolce Vita."

Orvieto this isn't true:

"There is a funicular that takes you from the train up to the old town."

The funicular goes partly the way up, Piazza Cahen. To get to the Piazza del Duomo you walk or take Bus B.

Bus 1 goes from the station to the Piazza della Republica. Bus tickets from the shop in the station.

For a beach Sperlonga would be the choice, train to Fondi-Sperlonga:

I love Orvieto. But I also love Spoleto. About 1.5 hours by train. The upper town and the system of elevators to go up are amazing and the upper town is small , beautiful and fascinating.
