Suggested southern Italy trip

Arriving in Rome on September 11 and departing September 30 back to California. Thinking about staying in Rome for the first 4 or 5 days. Next travel to the Amalfi coast and stay for 2-3 days in Positano. Next stay in Sorrento for 4-5 days, and capri for 2 days. Return to Rome the day before our flight out. Interested in seeking advice on how many days in each city and day trips to other nearby regions. My wife is more interested in not spending time rushing around and being exhausted by transferring from place to place. The best trips we have experienced were those not being rushed and enjoying a more carefree time. After reviewing several topics it appears that the best way to travel is by train and ferry.

The only recommendation I have is that when you visit Capri, staying overnight two nights is even better than the one night you list.

Remember, each travel day includes—packing and unpacking—getting to the airport or train station or car—travel—find hotel—and then you may be able to relax. I find that travel days are just that—getting from a to b, with limited time to explore.

You had posted previously, but still have questions. What is it you're most unsure of?
Positano is difficult to travel to, and doesn't offer much beyond high-end shopping. Plus, it's very crowded, even in the fall.
Have you given up on Venice?
Do you have a guide book for suggested actives?
Also, the location- specific facebook groups are a wealth of real- time info.
You have a nice amount of time for your adventure.
Have a great trip.

Everybody's different. For us a few hours up and down the hills in Positano was enough to feel like we'd seen it. 2-3 days for us would have been way too much, other might find it ideal and relaxing or use it as a base to explore other towns on daytrips via bus.

As for the ferry, be sure you have a plan B because they don't run if the seas are too rough. It sounds like you're going to Positano by ferry so be sure you've planned out how to get there by bus in the event the ferry isn't running. Also I'd rearrange your trip so you're not in Capri just before you go to Rome and then home. If a storm comes up and the ferries aren't running you may be stuck on Capri for an extra day.

I just purchased my air tickets and thinking about a less hectic travel plans. I would love to fit in Venice but don’t know if that will be too much or what day to add it. I like to run around and see as much as I can but my wife is less into running around and more into a slower pace. I purchased Steve’s books and will start planner but I also like to hear what others have experienced. Thanks for all that you share.

Wow, I had missed the point that Marco just made , and I agree, five days in sorrento/AC combined is enough. It's just so hard to get around in the area.
Which leaves time for Venice..........

Sorry if not clear, the four or five days in Sorrento will include capri and possibly staying on the coast. If I am able to fit Venice in the plan should I travel there first and then do the south locations.
