Please recommend cheap but pleasant hotel in Fiumicino for last night so I can drop off rental car, before flight leaves at 10 a.m. on a Friday early October.

I stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott a couple of years ago using Marriott Reward points. It was nice and I ate dinner at the hotel which was very good (pasta). I walked to a coffee shop about a block away for a cappuchino and a pastry for breakfast the following morning. I think the shuttle was free but I can't remember for sure. I have stayed at many Novotel, Mercure and Ibis hotels in Europe and they are
usually a safe bet.

Ron's arcticle is great. He knows his stuff. For my opinion, there is not much in Fiumicino. the hotels there know why you are there. One night and you're gone. Service and qualify can be spotty. Plus, the taxis are a bit pricey for being only 5 minutes away from the airport. I suggest that you spend your liast night in Rome. It looks like you have plenty of time to catch the early Leonardo Express and get out to the airport. The best ride is the taxi. The fare from Rome to the airport is fixed by law. It used to be 40E but now may be a few Euros more. The taxi will take you to Terminal 5 whereas the Leondardo only goes to Terminal 3 and then you take the shuttle between Terminal 3 and Terminal 5. Enjoy Rome for one more evening.
