Suburban Baths in Herculaneum

We went to Herculaneum last year and were disappointed that we could not see the Suburban Baths (the bath house closest to the boat houses). The Suburban Baths were under renovation. We are planning another trip in 2025. Has any been to Herculaneum in the last few months? Is the renovation complete? Thanks.

Hopefully you'll hear from someone who has been there very recently but the map on the scavi's website shows the baths (#3 in a red box) as non-visitable so still closed...unless that has changed and they haven't updated the map.

You could also contact the park and see if they're open or are expected to be sometime soon?

We were there about 3 weeks ago and the renovation was still in progress. That whole corner of the site was closed and there was no access to the exit tunnel. You could walk down all the steps to the beach but then you had to turn around and walk back out the way you came in. Had it been crowded it would have been a big mess, but on a Tuesday in January the dozen or so visitors didn’t get in each other’s way!

I was there last October and they were still closed them as I recall. There is probably a planned end date to the project but we all know about schedules and Italian time.

Good luck,

I'd add that we found random Villas at Pompeii closed on our last visit. There are a variety of reasons that are cited, including insufficient guards that day, conservation, renovation, or disputes with the managment. There is no remedy for tourists, you take your chances. We were lucky enough to find the Villa of the Mysteries open, although there were no guards visible, which was strange. That is a long walk to take in summer heat, without knowing if it will be open ...

The visitor center near the ticket counter should be able to advise on what is closed for the day. I believe there was a list posted at the time of my March 2023 visit. If shouldn't be necessary to hoof it to the far reaches of the park in order to find out whether a particular area is closed.
