Subiaco, the small city, is a pleasant place, but not a good base for more than a night or two, in my opinion. The only real attraction in town is Abbatian Fortress. It's a dramatic abbey / castle / fortress on a rocky spur high in the center of town. You can drive to it or hike up through the city's ancient streets. It has a long history, of course, including being the birthplace of Lucretia Borgia. You may be able to tour it with a guide, but it was closed when we went.
However, the big deal within the jurisdiction of Subiaco is the Monastery of Saint Benedict. This is a wonderful attraction located on a remote forested hillside and very memorable. Basically it is built around the cave where Saint Benedict lived as a hermit. The complex comprises two stacked churches and a network of frescoed chapels dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. The frescoes are seriously impressive and seen on a guided tour that winds through the monastery. The whole experience and the drive to the site will leave you dazzled.

Yes, Subiaco is definitely worth visiting if you’re exploring Lazio beyond Rome! The two main highlights are the Sacro Speco (Monastery of St. Benedict), built into the mountainside, and the beautiful Santa Scolastica Monastery.

You can also spend some time wandering around the medieval centre and seeing the Rocca Abbaziale and Ponte di San Francesco. If you enjoy nature, Lago di San Benedetto, the Aniene River area and Mount Livata are lovely options nearby. If you have a car, you can also combine Subiaco with nearby mountain villages such as Jenne or Cervara di Roma. It’s a great day trip for a mix of history, scenery and a quieter side of Italy.
