Mary & Michelle, keeping my fingers crossed for both of you in your upcoming trips. I'll be leaving in just over 2 weeks myself. Stephanie

You might need to go to Atlanta then to Rome as a direct flight. I'd be on the phone with the airline. It isn't going to change in three days if your flight is set from NY to Amsterdam, Zürich or London. That corridor goes right through the effected area.

Mary,

I share your sentiments!!!

Hopefully this improves in the next day or so. One of the airlines is already making plans to schedule flights with larger aircraft, to try and take care of the huge backlog.

Good luck!

Yea Mary it sucks big time. I was scheduled to leave yesterday for 3 weeks in Italy. Now have rebooked almost everything to 3 weeks from now. On a RS tour starting in Florence and ending in Rome then on my own for 8-9 more days. It was a very sad day yesterday but I am better now that the stress of rebooking the tour and airline is done. Don't lose hope. Linda

I cannot top what Mary has used as a header..

STUPID VOLCANO!

I feel for those of you are affected( well personally I would LOVE to be stuck in Paris,, but, I would hate to be stuck at home when I should be in Paris, or anywhere else) , and I too am nervous about how long it will take to not only get flights up again,, but clear the huge backlog!

I will be keeping my eyes on this,, I have 5 weeks to go,, but I have heard that volcanos can be very very stupid,, and continue to raise havoc( and ashes) for even months.

Italy's airspace/airports are not affected by the ash (yet), but if you are coming from the NE, the arc of the flight path will take you directly into the path of the ash. See if you can take a direct flight from Atlanta instead as you will take a more southerly route from there. Your airline and accommodations "should" be willing to give you credit towards a later trip should that be necessary.

Yes, keeping fingers crossed for all. Really weird that this event has not occurred since 1821. We are, hopefully, leaving in less than four weeks for a 3 wk trip to Europe.

We also are hoping to be leaving in 4 weeks and trying to figure out an alternative plan for later in the summer if necessary. (But I realllllllly want to go in 4 weeks! Aaaaaaaaack!)

Looks like most flights to western Europe from Atlanta are cancelled for the day although flights to Barcelona and Madrid are still on at the moment. Hopefully the "stupid volcano" (love the subject line, Mary) will come to its senses and behave itself. According to a geologist at the Smithsonian Institution the last time the volcano blew, the eruption lasted more than a year, from December 1821 until January 1823.
At least they did not have to worry about cancelled flights.

I hear you and feel for you! We are scheduled to leave tomorrow for Rome for a much anticipated 2-week trip. Alitalia said it hasn't cancelled one direct flight yet to/from the U.S. Plus I read that the Pope's flight into Rome tomorrow is still on. If you hear any updates, please let me know, and I will do likewise.

I hear you Mary. We were suppose to leave today for a week in Florence and the countryside. I'm very disappointed as we cannot rebook because we have limited vacation and have already booked out plans for the rest of the year. So, instead of the romance of Florence I found a last minute trip to Cancun.... not quite the same thing.

here in Rome no flight yet scheduled to fly home this last Sunday made the best though took train to Naples and then booked private driver to Amalfi coast wonderful day!!! If you need a driver for the Amalfi coast Alex Russo Car Service is just fantastic reasonable price and local young man from Positano cant say enough good things about him! Love Italy so much but hoping to get a flight sometime this week!

My trip to Venice on the 19th got canceled! Rental people in Venice moved our deposit to another month next fall and airline should refund full price. But what a letdown - I should be walking around Venice right now instead of sitting at home!

But probably better to be stuck at home than in an airport in Europe!

Let's hope the volcano quiets down!
