Studying Abroad & Cell Phone

Hello! I am a college student that is spending the fall semester in Rome. Any suggestions as to what to do for a cell phone? I am looking to have 3G data. I've heard the best option is to rent/buy a pay per month or etc. phone through an Italian wireless line. Any suggestions for the best one? Thanks!

Buy a phone locally. When you get to your school, as one of your Italians classmates and I am sure they can tell you the best deal. That is what our son did in Spain.

First you need a GSM unlocked phone. Frequencies used in Italy are 900Mhz and 1800Mhz, therefore you should by a dual or quad band. If you don't have such a phone already, you can buy one online from many websites, such as Amazon.com or Everbuying.com or others. Another option is to buy one phone in Italy. With a GSM 3g phone, you will then buy a SIM card from an Italian operator. The major operators in Italy are TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile), Vodafone, Wind. Find a mobile phone dealer displaying the logos of one or more of the above companies and buy a rechargeable SIM card with an Italia number. Ask for: SIM ricaricabile per Internet. For a month it's less than 10 euro. Check Vodafone for example. Key words: SMS= Short Message System (I.e. text messages) Mese=month Giorno=day Illimitato=unlimited Minuti=minutes
