Student Apartment in Rome

I will be in Rome this fall for about 2 months conducting dissertation research and am searching for an apartment to live in. I am having difficulty finding one to fit my needs. Does any one have any suggestions (places, websites, etc.) that would help me in my search. I would like a fairly inexpensive place with a private bathroom and kitchen somewhere within the historical center (or nearby). Thanks!

I found a place on craigslist. You will need to understand how to look at email details so you can see the IP address. That way you'll be able to see the origin...and spot all the replies from Lagos, Nigeria. So, On Craigslist you'll get some (well, a lot) of junk from scammers, but you might also connect with some decent people. I was able to find an apt in Rome (it was a vacation, we rented it for 80 euros/night for one week) and a nice farm house in Tuscany. Since you're there for two months you might consider outter Rome, and short metro ride away from the city center. Ciao! ps PM me if you want to learn about email details and IP addresses.

You'll get better responses if you define "fairly inexpensive" in euros or dollars and if you say when you'll be there. And did you try vrbo.com? We'll be staying in a small apartment near the Campo de' Fiori for about 85E a night. We found it thru vrbo.

vrbo.com seems like it is more oriented towards luxury apartments and not for those on a student budget. Is this true? I would like something well under EU 100 per night. Has anyone used romanreference.com? They have a ton of apartments in all price ranges and they seem fairly nice. Thanks!

Not true at all. As I mentioned above, we're renting an apartment in Rome for 85E a night through vrbo.

Yes vrbo.com has all kinds of price ranges. And don't forget that the price you see isn't necessarily the price you pay. Lots of owners are willing to negotiate based on length of stay. So try sending off a few requests for those places you liked and you might be surprised what they offer you.

I sent a few requests on vrbo.com...still waiting for responses. I've also looked on Rome Reference, which seems promising too. :)

Hi Nicholas
What are your dates? Don't know your needs. You can look at homeaway.com or freereservation.com Look at what they have to offer and do email the owner about a discount for longer stay. Is there an elevator (lift), if not how many flights of stairs, how much luggage you have, linens and dishes provided? Sounds crazy but it's another country. What's your budget with food, transportation, washer/dryer, entertainment and your fun time to enjoy. Don't want to sound harsh, that's the facts. On the brighter side. went to rome 2 years ago for a week and had a great time. lots to see and do. rented an apartment from freereservation in piazza navona area, was small and 4 flights to walk up (no fun!) but the best area. Keep up your mission and good luck.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! It certainly makes the process easier knowing that others have had success.

Not sure if you have found what you need Nicholas, but I just was looking at www.wantedinrome.com - it's a classified type online "newspaper" that list lots of housing options. I was referried to it by the SlowTrav website. You might want to give it a try.
