I thought we'd do Ostia but the museum is closed as are so many on Monday. Our Vatican reservations are in place for a Tuesday so that's out. Ideas about what to do/see that is open on a Monday in Rome?

Confirm online, but according to Rick's 2021 Rome book, which just happens to be sitting here while I browse in-between work assignments, the Colosseum, Forum, Capitoline Museum, Ara Pacis Museum and Museum of the Imperial Forums are open Monday. Baths of Caracalla are open too but close early on Mondays.
Churches are open and free
Piazzas are open and free
Pantheon is open and free
The whole eternal city is open and free
Plan a walk thru Centro Storico or Trastevere of Jewish quarter
Go on a food tour
IOW
There’s a million things you can do in Monday in Rome that are not museums
Like the PP stated, all of Rome is open and free!
I second the food tour suggestion ,we used eating Europe and we had so much fun and walked through new neighborhoods.
You can also look on Airbnb Experiences, they have lots of options such as pasta Making class, underground Rome, walking tours.
Thanks all. We decided on Colosseum and then walk to see the 'Moses with horns' nearby. Then, I think, we'll be in Monti? so we'll walk through and find some dinner there. Sounds like a plan?
Doggone it, Bean, the previous posters speak truth! Along with some civic museums open Mondays, a hefty amount of fabulous, bargain-priced (free!!) churches double as art museums. Some of them are just stuffed with glorious architecture, sculpture, frescoes, mosaics, and/or paintings. I don't think I've met an old one yet that I didn't find interesting in one way or another.
As well you could have yourself a look at a really, really old Roman catacomb: here's the website info for a couple out on the Appia Anticaboth open on Mondays:

Whatever the case, there is no reason to be bored in Rome on a Monday! BTW, did you ever find a ticket for the Bramante staircase + Cabinet of Masks that didn't cost an arm, leg and then some? I'm remembering that conversation from way back last winter.
Oops, I see you posted while I was banging away. I'm a really poky typist.
Kathy:
Thanks!
That Vatican exhibit choice costs a few arms and legs so we had to make the choice to let go of the idea. We are doing the Scavi tour in the morning with St. Peters then lunch then I'll buy general Vatican museum tickets for the afternoon and then spending money on a gallon of epsom salts for my feet that night!!!!
My most enjoyable afternoon in Rome was wandering through the city center and stopping into every church. There are a few (that get quick mentions in guidebooks) that lack a Caravaggio or Bernini but are still amazing to visit.
We’ve been to Rome a couple of times so have toured all the major sites more than once
This past trip we didn’t plan to “enter” anything
We ended up visiting Villa Farnesina which is wonderful and we were the only visitors there
So much to see and do in Rome!
