Struggling with Trenitalia - Pisa Centrale to Firenze S.M. Novella

Hi there,

I'm having difficulty finding a train from Pisa Centrale station to Firenze S.M. Novella. I have read many articles and help pages saying that there are trains leaving very often from the Pisa Centrale station, but only one train is showing up on the website every single time. This particular train is sold out, so I'm stumped. Is it just too busy of a time (August 13th), or am I doing something wrong? The only train showing up on the schedule for me is from 19:46-20:44 with a sold out sign.

Please help me out if you can,

Thank you in advance!

Patience, especially in Italy - patience. The reason you are not seeing anything is that schedules, especially for Regionale, trains have not been posted yet. And I doubt if the one train showing is sold out. That rarely happens. DO NOT buy Regionale train ticket until you are standing in the station. On-line Regionale tickets come pre-validated with restrictions so wait till you are there. If you want to see the schedules, just use the same day of the week next week. There is very little change in schedules from one period to the next.

PS -- Just checked the trenitalia web site. There are 23 trains between Pisa and Florence between the hours of 8am and 6pm. Roughly every 30 minutes. All are regional trains so buy your ticket when you get there. A Regionale ticket does have to be validated (time stamp) in the little blue/yellow/green boxes track side. Watch the locals do it. So relax.

Thank you!!
So trains very rarely sell out? I don't want to have to worry about getting to the train station with hotel reservations and not being able to take a train!

I added to my earlier postings. Regionale trains NEVER sell out because they cannot. Open seating - get on, find any seat, no seat available? stand till a seat becomes available.

Celine, the train you'll be taking from Pisa Centrale to Firenze S.M. Novella is a regional train with no seating assignments (2nd class). They do not sell out although on a very busy day you might end up standing. That has only happened to us once, though, and on a similar type of train in Belgium. Just buy your tickets when you get there.

(Oops. Apologies, Frank, for the redundancy; was typing as you were posting!)

The Regionale train schedules are now posted. Go plan your trip.

celine,

As the others have mentioned, the schedules have been posted for Regionale trains on that route, so you should be able to see a wider range of solutions.

There's no point in buying Regionale tickets in advance, as there are no price breaks and the trains never sell out. Just buy them when you arrive at Pisa Centrale, either from a Kiosk or staffed ticket office. One important point - BE SURE to validate the ticket prior to boarding the train or you'll risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot!

Turn up and pay at the machine.

Press the union jack flag on the touchscreen to change the language to English.
The first option -Top Left- will, I guarantee, be frequently issued tickets, and the most frequently issued ticket from Pisa Cent. will be either Pisa Aeroporto or Firenze SMN. Choose Firenze SMN.
Insert cash.
Validate ticket in little yellow box nearby.

Trains are so frequent there is no need to go for a specific one.

Yellow boxes are being replaced by green/white/red ones (red color doesn't really show).
