Stromboli volcano - anyone climbed it ?

My 2 month trip to Europe includes 2 nights in Stromboli (the birthplace of my maternal grandfather who I never met) and I'm thinking of doing the climb of the volcano.

There was a travel TV show in Australia that showed a segment on it and the tour started at about 5.30pm and it took about 3-4 hours to get to the crater. The view looked amazing although one of my concerns is (and it's a ridiculously silly question), do you have to climb back down ? See, I told you it was silly ! How on earth can you (safely) climb down a volcano in the pitch dark ?

Has anyone done this trip ? Is there another way to watch the nightly eruptions ? Can you see them from a distance ?

Well, I haven't a clue, but you got me curious, so with Google's help, I found this. It does mention needing a torch!

Sonia, you will have a guide to get you up and down again. Be prepared fro a face full of heat and 'dust'.

Great article, thanks Lesley. I'm still not convinced and even though I'm a bit of a daredevil, this is bordering a little on the crazy side for me !

Sonia, I lazily watched the 'fireworks' from a boat, and by all accounts, had a better view than those who climbed to the top. Mostly due to the fine ash in the face effect suffered by the climbers. But then, they did have a wonderful sense of achievement.
