Stresa Italy

Our plans are to spend 2 nights in Stresa before flying out from Malpensa. Any thoughts as to it being a good location for our last 2 days in Italy?

A couple of years ago, we stayed in Baveno, a few minutes north of Stresa, for our last 3 nights before flying out of Malpensa. Lovely end to a trip. Be sure to visit the Borromean Islands. If you are driving to the airport, I have some advice. First of all, allow at least half an hour more than you think you need to get there. The last bit - -
can't remember how much, but at least 20 miles or so - - is not autostrada. You drive along roads through towns and with roundabouts. Try to find out at which terminal your rental company is located. Unlike any other airport I've used, Malpensa has no rental return signs until seconds before you must turn off. While we were completing our paper work, a woman drove up and was told her company was in the other terminal. The sign did not indicate any company names. Now that I'm remembering all that, an extra hour wouldn't hurt.

rich, Stresa would be a great location for your last two days in Italy. It's a wonderful city, with some interesting sights. As the previous reply mentioned, visiting at least a couple of the Borromeo Islands would be worthwhile. the most interesting is Isola Bella, which has a large palace and ornate gardens (complete with Peacocks!). Isola Madre is also nice, and Isola Pescatori has some nice waterfront restaurants. If you have time, you might also enjoy a ride on the Cable Car to Mount Mottarone. There's a small garden area that can be toured at the mid-point, and a great view from the top (provided it's not too hazy). Although there's lots to see in Stresa, another option would be to use one day for a trip to Locarno (Switzerland) on the scenic Cento Valli Railway, returning by boat. It's a bit of a long day, but I found it enjoyable. The Guidebook contains details on that trip. Happy travels!
