Just arrived in Stresa this afternoon after 3 days in Varenna. We have 3 more days here before heading back to Milan for a day and then back to the States. We had planned to do the Lake Maggiore Express one of the days we're here, but found out today that the season ended last week. Tomorrow we're going to do the Isole (Bella, Madre, and probably Pescatore). And my friend wants to do the cable car ride for the views (I'm not crazy about heights so I'm talking myself into that!). But now we have some extra time in the schedule. Any suggestions? (We don't have a car with us.) Also, my friend's birthday is Monday...recommendations for a birthday-worthy restaurant? Thanks!

Aren't any ferries running? You xould go to Locarno, Switzerland for the day. ( don't forget to take your passport.)Or go up to pretty little Lake Orta , visit the small town and take a ferry out to the island in the middle of the lake. Buses used to go there from Lake Maggiore or rent a car for the day.

The ferry schedule we were given at the tourist office didn't include Locarno or Orta...I'll see if there's another schedule other than the one for the Isole.

We took a bus tour from Stresa to Orta through a travel agency: stresatravel.com - maybe only in summer, though.
