Judy, For a "budget friendly place" with a wonderful owner, I'd highly recommend Hotel Saini Meublé. The rooms are basic, clean and comfortable. The hotel is located in a great area, only a short walk from the boat docks and some really nice restaurants in Piazza Cadorna. You might try Caffé Torino or La Botte Trattoria. It would be possible to walk from the station to the hotel, but with luggage I'd recommend a Taxi. The hotel is located in a pedestrian-only street, so the Taxi driver will get you close, but not right to the door. Happy travels!

I would suggest Hotel Eden...right across the street from the boat docks. They also have a nice restaurant. They open after Easter so, unless you are going this week, they should be open.
