We will spend a day at the Vatican & wonder if there are food vendors nearby or if bringing food in is allowed. thanks.
There are plenty of food vendors. You cannot bring in food.
There are a lot of pizzerias right at the entrance to Vatican City. The pizzas will be your best bet, because all of the food right around there is pretty inferior, which is what happens when you have a captive audience.
Off Via Candia there is a Good pizzeria, La Rustichella which has a wood burning oven, and it's wonderful, and only about two blocks away: Via Angelo Emo 1. Also the Old Bridge Gelateria s just off Piazza Risorgimento across the
street from the Walls. The address is Via Bastioni 3.
If at all possible eat before you go, or give yourselves an hour break mid day and go to one of these.
My favorite restaurant in Rome is about 6 blocks away: Piacere Molise. 60 Via Candia, dinner only, and
opens at 7. (mostly locals and very little English spoken)
I love staying in this neighborhood because of the few tourists eating in these restaurants, which elevates
the quality of the food and reduces the prices.
There is an AMAZING gelateria just downhill, along the outside wall of the Vatican below the entrance, near the bus terminal. It's a tiny hole in the wall right at the corner and the guy who runs it is incredibly friendly and the prices are right! Not exactly "food" but a nice place for dessert after you visit the Vatican.
I think that's the Old Bridge that I was talking about! You can tell where it is by the long line of students!
Thank you, just what I was looking for. We are staying on Viale Vaticano for a week and I had hoped to find restaurants nearby for at least a few nights.
We loved Il Mosticone on Borgo Pio which is close to the Vatican. Good food; locals and tourists alike eat there. Try the involtini or grilled veal chop!
Hostaria dei Bastioni is just outside the Vatican. In several guidebooks and for good reason.
Sorry, I misspelled the restaurant name. It is Il Mozzicone on Borgo Pio and it is closer to the Castel Sant'Angelo. Still, a good place and close enough to the Vatican.

This is a great little shop is called Gelateria Millennium, just a couple blocks from our old apartment. Piacere Molise is also one of our favorite restaurants; We ate there at least twice a month for almost two years. Say hi to Franco, Angela and their son, Mauro. Also close by the Cipro Metro is Pizzarium, which has incredible pizza - no inside seating though.
We probably ate at La Rustichella a couple times a month also. The bread at night is great - stay away from the "buffet" as you only get one trip! We primarily ate pasta there.
