I’m sure it’s a long shot to get a response to this, but here goes: in 2018, I bought a small watercolor painting from an artist outside of the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. It’s a canal view, all in blue, and very dynamic. I finally got around to having it framed, and am really enjoying seeing it every day. I was wondering whether anyone else has encountered this artist, and knows his name and/or anything else about him. Thanks!
Is it signed?
Try using Google Lens to search the internet for similar images. Worth a try.
We have seen an artist in that location each time we have been in Venice —— as recently as last March. Of course who knows if it is the same one. But if someone who is in Venice sees your query, perhaps they could go by and try to get a photo of his or her art ( with permission of course) tp see if it is the same.
And as Pat suggests, see if you can figure out the signature. Having a name could help.
Thanks for the responses! Now that I look more closely, there is a signature, but it’s so intertwined with the little ripples on the canal that I can’t make it out. Google Lens got a lot of results, but no one Italian. So, still a mystery.
Another thought, try posting a photo of the painting in the Reddit sub for Venice https://www.reddit.com/r/Venezia/
Thanks for the suggestion, CL. Unfortunately, I feel rather squeamish about Reddit, but might take the plunge if nothing else pans out.
I am glad to know I am not the only one who is squeamish about Reddit. I won’t go there.
Thanks for that, Lola. I feel seen!
I am another who has never been to reddit and never will
Thanks, Nigel. Appreciate that.
We will be in Venice this fall and want to go to the Peggy Guggenheim museum. Happy to see if your artist is there and get his/her name for you if you like? Let me know.
That would be wonderful, Diveloonie! Thanks!
Edit: wanted to mention that he was just outside the exit to the museum.
👍🏻will put it in my notes to look for your artist.
Awesome! I should never have doubted the power of the Rick Steves Travel Forum.
Tammy, after the museum visit and the artist quest, continue on the path to the tip of the Dorsoduro peninsula at Punta del Dogana. It is right across the water from Piazza San Marco, and a wonderful viewpoint. We go there first thing every time we visit Venice. Then walk back on the Giudecca Canal side, along the wide Zattere sidewalk. And stop at Nico for a gelato if you are hungry. Or sit at a table on their floating terrace for an aperitif if it is time for that.
Thanks, History Traveler! Not my guy, but I really enjoyed watching the YouTube video of him doing a charcoal drawing - beautiful.
Thanks for that tip Lola! I am so excited to visit Venice!
Diveloonie, this thread has got me thinking of various other things I’ve enjoyed in the Dorsoduro area: The Punta della Dogana, certainly; Santa Maria della Salute (it’s so magnificent inside as well as out, and there’s a glorious view across the Grand Canal from the front steps); walk westward a bit, and you get to see the Squero di San Trovaso, where they build and repair gondolas (and there a couple of really traditional cicchetti bars across the small canal from it, so you can eat and watch the gondola activity at the same time); if you walk up on the Accademia Bridge, you get the classic view of della Salute; ……. Anyhow, enjoy!
