Strategizing Venetian Hotels

My husband are I are planning to spend three days in Venice after flying in from the States: Sunday, July 26 to Tuesday, July 28. In looking at Rick’s listings, I have noticed huge discrepancies in hotel pricing strategy. Each establishment seems to have a different opinion of whether this is high, middle, or low season. We are willing to stay in any of Rick’s preferred neighborhoods (near San Marco, Rialto Bridge, or Accademia Bridge) and spend up to 175 euro per night. Value for the location is more important to us than price. So what “season” is late July in Venice? Are some hotels labeling this high season to rope in new travelers early? Bottom line…what would be your booking strategy: book sooner or later for a great hotel at a good price?

Can't give any specific hotel info since we usually stay at apartments. BUT if you see something you want, you should book it soon as summer in Venice is crowded and spots will go quickly. Not to say you wouldn't find something last minute but it might be harder and it probably wouldn't be at a discount.

Here is what looks to be a nice studio apartment near the Rialto in your price range. We have rented from this agency before.

I can't imagine any Venetian hotel not thinking July is high season, but whatever, if you want a good place book as soon as possible. I recommend you stay in Dorsodoro, near the Academia Bridge or futher out.

Laura, I'd book early. If plain, simple and cheap with a great location sounds good to you, I'd go with Casa Cosmo in Rick's book. It is a little hard to find, but absolutely in the middle of everything, and as cheap as it gets with good quality. Nothing fancy, mind you...rooms are small, but clean.

It is a real find in the middle of a city with some potentially big rip-offs.

I would plan on that being high season. Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo was a great hotel for our trip. I booked it with a rate of 140E/night and then bought my RS book and saw that it was in the book. Discount at the hotel when you pay if you pay with cash. I would book sooner than later if traveling in July.
Have a great time.

Hi, Laura. I've found Venice to be so small that location isn't really an issue, as long as you find a nice, quiet, air conditioned place. Personally, I stay by the train station so I don't have to lug my bags all over, and it's easy transportation connects for the water taxis, etc. Hotel Villa Rosa is one I thought was ok.

I stayed at Locanda Ca'del Brocchi. Family run and located in a quiet Dorsoduro neighborhood behind the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. Near three vaporetto stops. Loved it. Rooms were more than we expected and our bathroom was spacious. Breakfasts consisted of rolls (some packaged), yoghurt, juices and great coffee. I checked rates for your dates and they looked to be 109 euros per night for a twin. I believe this place is still undiscovered by many.

Wherever you stay be certain that it has air-conditioning. You will definitely need it in July!

Hi Laura ~

When I started planning my trip this summer, I got quotes for June dates in Venice. When our dates changed to July, the same hotels quoted me lower rates. I would say July is Mid pricing. Possibly because of the heat. I hear it is sweltering in July so definately go for the AC.

Good luck!

My first trip to Venice was during a heatwave in early June. The thermometer read 103 Farenheit. Unfortunately we also made the mistake of choosing a hotel in Mestre which meant we couldn't just pop back to the room for quick rest and cooling down. Lesson learned on that trip.
