The 3+ euros that you pay to store your luggage at the train station, is that per bag or per person ? We are thinking of going on a short trip to Padua, go back to Venice, claim our luggage then catch our train to Florence. Is a 40-min window enough to do this or will we be short on time ? Thanks.
It's per bag. Why not buy a cheap local regional ticket from Venice to Padua and take you luggage with you. Then, store your luggage in the Padua train station. Buy a second set of tickets from Padua to Florence on the Eurostar.
Yup, per bag - it's a bit tricky: Follow the signs for bag storage, and -pass- the defunct row of of permanently closed lockers. Keep going, and on your right past the restrooms will be a manned checked baggage station.
You wouldn't be surprised how many people follow the signs to the closed locked, and stop there, then get all upset.
Trains from Venice to Florence go via Padua. You'd be back tracking if you returned to Venice. Larry's suggestion is a good one - store your bags at Padua station and then go directly to Florence from there.
Will modify plan accordingly. I was under the impression that there is no luggage storage in Padua, I don't know why. Thanks again !
I don't know if this is still a problem in Italy, but when I was there, there were frequent strikes by the personnel who run the left-luggage stations. Beware the "sciopero" (strike). On a day trip to Pisa, I ended up carrying two bags on my back all day. This will likely not happen to you, but do remember to ask your hotel managers. Often these strikes are announced in advance and reported in the news. Your hotelier can warn you in advance on any bad days to attempt day trips or leave your luggage.
