We're flying into Rome fairly early in the morning but can't check into our accommodations until late in the afternoon. We hate to waste the day and are looking for places to store luggage for the day, hopefully near downtown, as we don't want to go back out to the airport to pick it up.
Any thoughts?

Many train stations have luggage storage if not inside, nearby....a quick google search got me these:

Have you contacted your hotel (?) and asked if you can store your luggage prior to check-in time? We’ve never had a problem doing that in Ireland, England, France, and, most recently, Italy last fall.
Perhaps the OP is staying at an apartment and early check-in or leaving luggage not an option.
Do a search on "left luggage Rome" and you will get a number of hits from firms such as Stasher, Luggage Hero, etc., as well as facilities at Termini. You should be able to find a location either near Termini or near your lodging.
