Storing luggage

Is hotel check-in time usually around 3 in Italian hotels like it is here in the States? If so, will they hold your suitcases for you somewhere? We get in to Rome at 8:30 in the morning, any suggestions for what to do for those first few hours we're in town?

Drop off your luggage and head out for at least a half day of sightseeing. If your room is ready try to resist the urge to maybe take a nap (it's better to stay up and go to bed at your normal bedtime).

Don - We usually head straight to our hotel when we arrive. Many times, the room has been ready. When it hasn't been ready, the hotel has held our bags. Check in time is usually in the afternoon, but each establishment can have different times.

No problem with storing luggage but it is often in unsecured or very light secured area so don't leave any valuables. We have never had a problem in many, many days of travel. AND we have found through much experimentation that a short nap from 2-4, 3-5 does wonders for solving our jet lag problem. During our fist six or eight trips we did gut out and tried to stay awake all day in the sun shine. And then one trip we flew asleep later PM for an hour and half and then found we could easily last till 10 or 11pm. And now this is our pattern.

We are planning to stop and see Pompeii on our way from Naples to Sorrento. Where would the best place be to store our luggage? I have heard there is a place at the train station in Naples and also a facility just outside the entrance to Pompeii. Any suggestions?

We left our bags at the entrance into Pompeii, a short walk from the train station. There's a small office to the right of the turnstiles. They gave us a ticket for each bag.
