I'm heading to Florence via Rome and thought i'd make a pit stop at the Vatican Museum & St. Peters on the way in. However, everything i've found regarding the Termini Baggage Deposit is that the lines can be quite long (1hr or more). I read on a post here that you can check "big" bags at the Vatican Museum and/or St. Peters. Does anyone know if Big Bag means airline carryon size (e.g. RS bag)? I'd hate to waste 2 hours or more at Termini if I can check bags at St. Peters (preferably, as i'd like to use the shortcut if it's open). Thanks for any insight!
I don't know exactly what to suggested. I have been past the Termini left luggage a dozen times and I have never seen a line more than three or four deep. Maybe Ron can respond with a better answer.
Hi Theresa,
I understand Rome Tiburtina Station has a place where you can store bags that is not that crowded, and it's a short cab ride from Termini if Termini winds up being worst case.
I haven't tried it myself yet, but we'll be storing bags there ourselves in about a week. I'll let you know how it goes if you like. Chris
Thanks for the tip. Probably will skip the taxi route - one way or the other looks like lines are in my future unless i just go directly to florence. Maybe we'll run into each other at Termini as i'm leaving next week too.
Ciao Theresa,
The Vatican does store bags, umbrellas, strollers, backpacks, etc.... but I've never seen anyone do a "full size" bag. That's not to say it can't be done. I have seen folks store carry-on size rolling luggage there - as it will fit through the X-Ray units. If I'm over that way in the next few days I'll check into it...
As far as Termini Storage lines, it's a mixed bag (oops - sorry for that line...). If you happen to come in after an International, ES, or AV train has arrived with many "travelers," then yes, the lines can get long. But most often the line is 5-10 folks deep. Just leave plenty of time for PICKING UP your luggage if you have a scheduled train to catch. For more info on the Termini station and the "left luggage" area, read this: CLICK HERE . Good Luck!
Thanks for the info. I'd just hate to leave the Vatican 3 hours early in case the luggage pick up line is long, but maybe that's what i'll have to do. Fortunately my hotel in florence is giving me a bit of leeway on my arrival time so i probably shouldn't have to purchase a ticket in advance and then sweat whether i make that train or not.
Theresa, a week ago I used the Left Luggage facility at Termini. It's downstairs. A plane load of German tourists was ahead of me so I had to wait about 30-35 minutes, but no one was irritated or stressed. Collecting was almost straight away. It cost Euro 4 per piece.
I am also wondering if there is a left luggage room at tiburtina rail station ?
