Our plan is to visit Rome and Venice soon. I try to purchase souvenirs that are functional so we can remember our travels while using our souvenirs. I usually navigate towards kitchen items as they get used frequently. Does anyone have any recommendations for stores in Rome or Venice where we can purchase kitchen gadgets or dishes? Or if you can't remember the specific store name, maybe the street or area where stores can be found. A few examples of what I would hope to find would be a cheese serving dish or oil and vinegar dispenser. Are there lots of stores in Rome and Venice for this type of purchase? Thanks :)
Are you interested in locally made items?
If so, there are Murano pitchers and glasses, goblets, bowls, vases.
You will come across dozens of stores with these items just by window-shopping. La Rinascente is a department store chain with several stores in major cities. I honestly can't remember the names of specific stores because there are so many of them!
If you want things that are locally made, I like the island of Burano in Venezia because it has lots of artisans' studios there.
Thanks! I'll definitely add Murano and Burano to my list as I do like locally made. I already have items that look like they are from Italy, but when you turn them over they state they are from the beautiful country of China. LOL
Here's another vote for La Rinascente wherever you can find them and also Coin.
In Venice I've found it profitable to wander way off the tourist paths and go into little floor to ceiling hardware type stores. My favorite finds (much cheaper than department stores) have been cheese servers and graters, salt/pepper/toothpick holders, gnocchi rollers, ravioli crimpers, oil & vinegar bottles/tins, metal gelato spoons, etc. Love using these things and sometimes giving them as gifts.
Mona, good idea about the hardware stores. I never even thought about checking out hardware stores in other countries. I have found the cutest gadgets in local hardware stores where I live or in surrounding states. Thanks for the tip. The items that you have purchased are exactly what I was hoping to find. :)
I also look in the kitchen gadget aisle of large grocery stores. There are some large ones, usually in a basement, in Rome. Practical, everyday Italian gadgets not the super designer things you'll find in department and housewares stores. Check out both types.
Edit: I'll look up the names of the big basement grocery stores when we aren't driving later today. There is one in the Trasteverde (sp) neighborhood and one in the Vatican area that I've been in.

Mona, thanks! We plan on staying in the Trasteverde area and Vatican City. Thanks for your help. :)
There's a kitchen store on Via del Plebiscito between Piazza Venezia and Largo Argentina. I am sorry I do not know the name of it. There are also Bialetti Stores all over that have some nice kitchen items.

Thanks, Laurel :)
We bought some dishes at an autostrada rest area that we still use and enjoy, they have recipes painted on them.
Also keep in mind there's a store in Santa Barbara CA that might sell stuff you'd like, or at least serve as a pre-shopping resource:
I think I stepped inside this store in Rome. Not far from Piazza Navona.

Thanks Phred and Rachel :)
Pilgrim, OLIVE WOOD! There are Olive Wood stores, stalls and products all over Italy, off hand I can remember seeing shops and market stalls in Sicily, Umbria, Tuscany, along Lake Como, etc. No doubt they are in major cities as well. Products include kitchen tools, and all sizes of trays, plates and bowls. Beautiful, especially if you choose the grain patterns that impress you the most. Olive wood, or maybe ceramics or glass, ravioli rolling pins or gelato scoops. Yes, gelato scoops!
Thanks, Larry. I think I am going to need bigger luggage LOL
When we spent a month in Venice we shopped for housewares at the Ratti, a hardware/variety store just up the street from us,,on Salizada San Lio---about a 6-minute walk from Rialto Bridge, unless you stop for gelato on the way. They had kitchenware, appliances, and hardware items downstairs and electronics upstairs. My husband bought his Kindle there.
Thanks, Lola.
The large grocery store in the Trastevere neighborhood is actually a Coin store. It's right next to the hospital @ Viale di Trastevere, 60.
The Pottery Outlet Store mentioned in SB isn't an outlet store any more:-( --they used to have a couple of big sales each year in a remote location. I buy things from the store from time to time but their prices are ~25% more than what you'd pay in Italy. They really have lovely things. Sometimes I just have to tell my husband it's still cheaper than a plane ticket to Italy...
Thanks, Mona :)
The large grocery store in Trastevere is a CONAD.
Thanks, Tom_MN :)
Careful how you pronounce that store name. :-O
And keep in mind that even if that SB store has higher prices, you don't have to try and ship from Italy and good luck getting pottery home in your luggage!
find a CO-OP ...they have everything
Check out Sorelle Adamoli. I bet it's the same one Laurel is thinking about. I've bought seasonal things there like Christmas and Easter decorations. Also bought a Bialetti coffee pot in a color I couldn't find anywhere else. It's not cheap and it appears to cater to tourists but it's a great place to spend some time if you like that sort of thing.

For any of you looking for cute, versatile, metal gelato spoons, the WMF stores and department stores in Germany carrying this brand sell a four pack of gelato spoons called Eis Shovels.

Thanks, Mona. I will make note of that. We are hoping to visit Germany, Austria and Switzerland on our next adventure after Italy.
