Stopping in Orvieto on the Way from Florence to Rome

This is a followup to my previous question about visiting Orvieto as a day trip from Rome. An alternative would be to stop there on our way from Florence. We could arrive between 11:30 and noon, stay about 4 -5 hours, and arrive in Rome late afternoon or early evening. I will need to check that there is a place to leave luggage at the station in Orvieto. Would this be too rushed and give Orvieto short shrift? It would allow us another full day in Rome. We will be there 4 1/2 days, leaving on the 5th day. Thanks for your feedback as always!

I think it's a reasonable way to get a taste of Orvieto and have a nice lunch and a walk around. Try to arrive earlier if you can pry yourselves out of bed in Florence.

That is very do able. I'd probably stay later in the day too. Stay for dinner and sunset over the countryside with some great views from the top of Orvieto. Trains run hourly and head into Rome after sunset.

There isn't a bad storage at the Orvieto Train station however. Do you have Rick's Italy Guidebook? He lists the Hotel Picchio in there very close to the train station that will keep your bags. I think it was 4.50 euro for the day. You can email the hotel. I did when my original plan was to do what you did, then I changed to staying the night in Orvieto.

Great idea. One important thing to note. The 55 high-speed Frecciarossa trains a day from Rome to Florence are non-stops. They whizzzzz through Orvieto. Thus 1hr35min to Rome turns into 2hr20min from Florence to Orvieto on either a Regionale Veloce or Intercity train. No big problem; just note the difference and plan accordingly.

It appears that there is a staffed left luggage facility at the Orvieto train station. Here's a snapshot of what I see on Trenitalia. http://gyazo.com/3eb2d72d26793bad4668be75b257e4e9 I just don't know what lavorativi means.

No bag storage. That screen shot appears to be the ticket window hours

Robert is right, the chart shows ticket office (Biglietterie) hours at the stations in the Umbria region. "Lavorativi" means "workday", Monday through Friday (1-5) or Monday through Saturday (1-6). The week starts on Monday.

Just checked the trenitalia website. It says no Deposito bagagli in Orvieto. Do check the train schedules from from Orvieto to Rome. In the afternoon - evening, there's one every 2 hours.
