Stop in Naples?

We are going to Italy in October 2017 for the first time. We are flying into Naples and taking a commuter train to Pompeii. Is it worth the stop to see Naples quickly before going to Pompeii. We will be taking the commuter back the next morning to Naples and then a train to Rome. I would like to book the high speed train to Rome and need a time planned or should we take a few hours to do a bus tour while we are there. Our time is quick in Rome so it may be more important to spend time in Rome than Naples.

There is nothing special about downtown Naples. However, National Museum in Naples is almost critical if you are visit Pompell. All of the items recovered from Pompell are in the museum. Easy to spend half a day if not more. There is a special room in the museum that used to require special permission from the pope to visit since all of the erotic material from Pompell is displayed here. In the world of pornography, somethings are a constant.

If the choice is between spending time in Rome or Naples I vote Rome, emphatically. (That's not to say that Naples doesn't have its charms - just that Rome is more enjoyable to more tourists.)

Don't fall victim to the syndrome of trying to see and do everything. You'll end up miserable.

Thank you for both of your responses! I especially like the reminder to not fall victim of trying to see everything!

I would spend the night in Napoli rather than in Pompei, so you can take the commuter train to Pompei unencumbered by luggage. There are a couple of good hotels across the street from the train station, I like StarHotel Terminus for a short stay. The metro stop is a few meters away, take the metro to the "Museo" stop for the Archeological Museum mentioned above, either before or after your daytrip to Pompei.
