We are catching a cruise ship on May 27, 2026 in Trieste. I am looking for an interesting town for a one night stay between these two cities that is easily accessed by train. We want to avoid Venice since we have been there and want it to be an easier travel day. Also, let me know if you have a recommendation for lodging in Trieste, 4 star, king bed if possible.
Bologna or Ravenna
The simplest access would be Bologna which is a very large city. If you’re willing to change trains, I’d recommend one of the smaller, great for a one day visit cities of Parma (prosciutto de Parma, Reggiano parmigiana), Padova (Scrovigni chapel, basilica of St. Anthony), Vicenza (Palladian architecture and the Teatro Olimpico).
Bologna, Ferrara, or Padua. At least right now, there are a couple of direct trains from these cities to Trieste. Otherwise you will always change trains at Venezia Mestre.
Do not underestimate the time to reach Trieste. Up to Venezia Mestre trains are fast and frequent, but between Mestre and Trieste are not. I would stick to the main itinerary, so Bologna (still quite distant from Trieste), Ferrara or Padova, but I would not take detours.
