Still Looking for Someone Who Has Been to Lake Region in April...Too Cold?

Our original plans were to fly into Rome and head south, taking in Sorrento/Capri, Pompeii, Amalfi Cost and then head to Sicily and fly home from Sicily via Rome. Instead, I found a good deal on air fare to Milan so I booked tickets for April 5 thinking we could either train it from Milan to Naples and stick close to original plan or stay in Northern Italy to visit the Lake District, Cinque Terre, Portofino etc. My concern is not only the cold weather in Northern Italy but more importantly that many restaurants, hotels and even some transportation options (especially ferries) might not be open or might be operating on limited schedules.

Would love to hear from travelers who have first hand experience of Italy in April.

Thank you.

In the resorts, many things may not be open until May, but a town or city of any size will have enough choices for you to have a great trip. The only variable in the north is the weather, which can be cold and sometimes rainy. Cinque Terre and Portofino are the places that might have fewer opportunities, but I have not been in those places earlier than the beginning of May, and by then they were up and running (beach concessions are not usually open until June, however).

You should be fine. Trees generally won't have leaves, but grass will be green and some flowers and trees will be in bloom. Mountainous areas will still be dormant. The Cinque Terre ferries start in late March, and all the services will be open. Easter is April 16 and you'll want to have reservations for that weekend well in advance.

Don't give up on travel to the south.
The schedule for April isn't out yet for Easyjet, a budget airline, but it might be possible to fly to Naples from MXP a 1H25m flight directly from the airport. Just be sure you give yourself at least 3 hours between when you land and when you book the next flight.

You can see historic weather patterns for various locations on the Weather Underground website. That will give you an idea of what temps & rainfall are generally likely in early April.
