we have been thinking of staying ouside Siena for the lower portion of the trip.Where do you think is a good place in Northern Tuscany. We have stayed in Lucca but I would rather something else this time. See this is my second time ,but last time I broke my leg and was confined to a wheelchair.....so I'm gonna get it right this time :)

Hi Pat, I found two fabulous places on Tuscany.net. i was wary because the properties on Tuscany.net seem too good to be true, but I did my homework and the places I stayed were as good, perhaps better than represented.

I always cross-reference properties with reviews on tripadvisor.com. Once I narrow down my final choices I look for reviews on slowtrav.com and (if applicable) virtualtourist.com and expedia.com.

By the way, both faram stays were within my budget of $100 Euro a night for a single night. Let me know if you want to know where I stayed.

I have booked the Agriturismo Msrciano for 5 days next Sept (they allow stays of less than a full week) based on the location (just a few minutes south of Siena) & the reviews on-line that I found. The price was good (82 euros/night) and it includes breakfast. Unfortunately because I haven't stayed there yet, I can't tell you for sure how it is but I was really pleased with the reviews I read. Good luck & happy travels.

Pat,

if food right at your accommodation is important you might have better luck searching for a B&B. Most farmhouse accommodations are self-catering. There are exceptions though. Tuscany.net shows probably the best selection there. For other recommendations check the listings and reviews at http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/vr/index.htm

When are you travelling? If it's during mid or high season it will be VERY difficult renting a place for less than a week. You might be better off looking for only one place in central Tuscany instead of splitting the time up.
