Stelvio Pass

Has anyone driven the Stelvio Pass, and what are your recommendations on where to stay the night before driving it in order to get an earlier start? This will be in June.

We will be driving from Cortina d' Ampezzo to Bolzano the day before, and I didn't know whether we should stay in Bolzano or go on to Merano, or one of the towns between there and Prato Allo Stelvio. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, we plan to drive down the pass, go to Bormio, then up to Livigno, Munt la Schera (in Switzerland), Zernez, then down to St. Moritz. How many days do we need to allow for that?

Glorenza (Glurns) is a lovely town just north of the Stelvio. Timing is all dependent upon you. I mean, you can make that loop in a day practically. Personally, St. Moritz is a snooze in the summer and over-rated in the winter!

Not knowing if you are just looking for driving roads and what the final destination is, I am hesitant to offer any additional advice. Iwill say though that Hwy/Rte. 3 from St. Moritz to the Italian border can be a very fun run. Relaxing at times, challenging at others.

Study the Munt la Schera transit conditions carefully. The passage through the tunnel is quite expensive and it works only in one direction according to a timetable - under different conditions, you could have to wait several hours or even a whole day.

If Munt La Schera is closed, in summer you can head south from Livigno through the pass of the same name. The road joins the Bernina pass road. It is absolutely stunning!
As a summer base, I much prefer Pontresina to St Moritz, by the way. Or Sils Maria.
Lastly, driving from Glorenza or Merano to Pontresina via Bormio and Livigno is very doable in a single day, but I believe Bormio is worth the overnight stay if you do desire.

By the way, when you say June, you mean mid-late June, right? Early June has a non-zero chance of the Stelvio pass still being closed; opening dates tend to vary between late May and 10 June.

Marc,
Thank you for your response. We are flying in and out of Milan. The first part of our trip is to some of the towns around Lake Garda, then we head up to the Dolomites for several days. After that, we wanted to drive the Stelvio Pass, then work our way back down to Milan. We'll try to work in Glorenza (Glurns) after your suggestion.

I chose St. Moritz only because it was on the route down to Lake Como and then Milan. Now we will change that route since lachera told me about the tunnel. I'm glad he did. I didn't know anything about it, and I hadn't looked it up yet. Now we'll go the way balso suggested, south from Livigno and over to Pontresina. We've been to Lake Como years ago, but we want to spend a little more time there before going back to Milan. Thank you for your suggestions, and we'll look forward to Hwy. 3 from St. Moritz!

lachera,

Thank you so much for telling me about the Munt la Schera tunnel and its timetable. I hadn't looked that up yet, but now I'm happy to change and go the way balso suggested, south from Livigno and over to Bernina pass road. I'm glad you gave me a warning about the tunnel. Thank you!

balso, thank you for your suggestions! We will now plan to go south from Livigno thru the pass and on Bernina pass road. I'll be anxious to see that! And, we will also now stop at Pontresina and/or Sils Maria on our way. I love getting suggestions from people who have been to these places. This area is all new to us.

We will be in Stelvio on the 10th and 11th of June. I do hope the pass will be open then! That's why we planned this at the end of our trip rather than the beginning.

Thank you for your help!

Klausen pass is beautiful and Altdorf is a cute town to stay in. Stelvio is beautiful at the bottom, apple orchards and the like but the top is ulgy, it was my least favorite of the several passes I have travelled over. I nicknamed it Satan's pass that is how little I liked it. I know that I'm not answering your guestion, just giving an FYI as it sounds like your still in the planning phase.

Joanne, thank you! I will definitely look at Klausen Pass and Altdorf. I appreciate all suggestions. I looked them up, but they are further into Switzerland than we are going this time. I'll save that info for our trip to Switzerland, maybe next summer. Thanks again!

I understand the OP wants to drive the Stelvio, but once you are in high Venosta valley, the easiest itinerary to Switzerland and Engadine is through the val Müstair and the Swiss national park to Zernez.

lachera, thank you again. We decided to save that area for the next trip, but I will definitely keep that information to help me plan next time.
