I will take train from FCO to Rome Termini. I want to stay in small towns alone the train route. How can I find the names of the various stations ?
John, you can find the names of the stops between FCO and Termini by going to the trenitalia.com site.
The distance between the two is not far.
thanks for the information. I went to website and apparently train from FCO to Rome is express. It seems at this point I may have to take a bus. That should work.
John, do you mind if I ask why you "want to stay in small towns alone the train route" between the airport and Rome? That's one of the more unusual statements I've seen here.
Are you interested in the Castelli Romani, small towns outside of Rome? Many can be accessed by train.
As far as I know, the airport shuttle bus doesn't stop along the way, either; I don't know of a bus that does stop, but there may be one.
Perhaps you're wanting to stay in a smaller town outside of Rome, but within easy train distance? If you take a look at a map, you'll see that there aren't any small towns in the 12 miles between Fiumicino and Rome, either by bus or by train - just the suburbs of Rome. That said, there are quite a few places within about an hour of Rome by train, such as Orvieto.
Your question shows a lack of understanding about what is between FCO and Termini. Look at a map. There are no small town - just typical suburbs much like any US city. The Leonard Express is the main train between the two and it is an express running every 30 minutes. There is a local train running the same route but stops at St. Peters and Trastivera. You need to explain what you mean or want with "stay in small towns along the train route."
I agree small town is vague. Rather than stay inside Rome....I prefer staying outside the city 30 miles or less and take a train or bus when I want to visit Rome. I enjoy public transportation and do this everytime I travel in America. I have found a few places outside Rome with local color that appeal to me. I just need assistance in finding rail or bus stations between FCO and Rome and I can piece together the trip. Thanks for the imput.
This rail map is wonderful:

Some small towns surrounding Rome don’t have train connections through Roma Termini. For example, if you wanted to stay in Lido di Ostia, you would take the local train from FCO to Roma Ostiense and change to another local train there. If going to one of the towns north of Rome, you might take the local train from FCO to Roma Trastevere or Roma Tiburtina and change there. To find train connections from FCO (Aeroporto Fiumicino) to a town you’re considering, use the Tutti i Treni tab for your search. You can also search using a destination past the town you’re considering to see other possible stops – e.g. search for trains to Viterbo or Orvieto. Bus service to outlying towns not serviced by train may leave from the Tiburtina bus station (short walk from Roma Tiburtina train station and close to a Metro stop). Not sure whether there’s a website for its bus schedules, but maybe someone else knows and will post.
John, what I don't understand is why you seem to think that the only way to get to those small towns is from "rail or bus stations between FCO and Rome". As pointed out above, there are three different train stations in Rome that you would go to to transfer to smaller towns. There's nothing magical about the route between Termini and Rome that gets you to other towns.
