Stays include Naples, Sorrento, Orveito, Florence & Rome

I would appreciate assistance regarding where to begin. On the ground for 18 days. We will rent a car for
Umbria and Florence picking up and dropping off at the airport. Naples and Sorrento will be by bus or train. Would we make the best use of time starting in Naples and Sorrento or picking up our car upon arrival and heading to Orveito?

If anyone has done a similar trip, please share your input. Travel is not until September 2020.

Many Thanks!

You don’t need nor will you want a car in any of those locations unless you are planning to see some of Umbria/ Tuscany countryside then yes a car is useful.

Do you have an idea of where you might fly into and out of? Look for open jaw
Perhaps into Rome, out of Florence?

In that case
Rome then to Naples/ Sorrento then train to Orvieto where you can pick up car as you leave but drop the car before Florence.

Picking up / dropping at airports usually means a higher rate.

Rome 4
Naples/Sorrento 5
Orvieto 2?
Tuscany/Umbria 4
Florence 3

I agree with Christine. The Hertz rental location is across the parking lot from the Orvieto train station, and it's a very popular place to pickup and drop off rental cars coming into and going out of Rome.. It just takes 70 minutes on a local train from Rome Termini to get to Orvieto.

I appreciate your time. . We really want the car for Umbria and Tuscany to explore the region at our pace. Due to high car rental costs, we wanted to pick up and drop off at the same Agency.
I love the suggestion of getting our car out of Orvieto instead of Rome. This makes good sense plus, from there we can catch the train down to Naples and Sorrento.

Thank you so much!

We’ve always picked up/ dropped off diff location. No drop off fees.
We use Autoeurope.com. Unfortunately they no longer work with Hertz in Orvieto from what I understand.

If you could share more details- how do you want to split your time? Who is traveling? Have you been to Italy before?

There are lots of ways to organize your locations.
You’ll want to be sure that wherever you stay while you have the car is an easy in/ out for day trips with safe available parking.

18 nights is a wonderful amount of time to work with.

We are three friends returning to Italy. We loved Orvieto along with its easy access to visiting Umbria. Giving ourselves 4 nights there.

Next we head to Florence for 2 nights. Plan on finding another 2 elsewhere in the region.
Sorrento is 3 nights and 2 more in Naples. The remainder of our trip will be Rome.

Our previous trip we over packed. Thankfully we had a car from start to finish. This trip we’ll pack less and include train or bus in our transportation.

Putting a trip together is fun and challenging. I recently retired which gives me more time to scout and present an itinerary for approval. Just knowing Auto Europe doesn’t overcharge for a different drop off is very helpful. Open to suggestions and as always appreciate your time.

Just to clarify
AutoEurope is a US based consolidator with usually the best rates but always excellent customer service
They work with many rental agencies, we’ve had Hertz and Europcar rentals thru them.

You might give them a call and see how they can help you with your rental
They are always highly recommended on this forum

Another town you may enjoy in Tuscany is Montepulciano
We loved our stay there

You might find better options flying R/T Rome for this itinerary.

Arrive Rome, train to Florence. There are two direct trains from FCO at 11:08 and 15:08. Or if these don't fit your schedule, take a taxi to Roma Termini fixed fare is 48€, and train to Firenze S M N station.

Rent your car after your Florence visit to visit Tuscany and Umbria. Drop your car in Chiusi,, then short train to Orvieto.

Train Orvieto, visit, then train to Naples. There's an intercity train to Naples at 11:52 that will take a few minutes longer, but has no changes and is half the price.

Visit Naples/Sorrento area then fast train to Rome.

This will eleminate any backtracking other then heading back to Rome.
