We are flying into Naples on a Wednesday afternoon and will have three full days in this area before taking train to Venice on Sunday. We plan on spending time in Herculaneum and Pompei and perhaps Positano and/or Capri. My question pertains on where to spend the four nights: should we just get to Sorrento and stay and do day trips from there , or would it be as convenient and perhaps a little less hectic to stay in Vico Equense ? Are connections from Vico easy as it’s on the Circumvesuviana Rail Line? Thanks.
Neither of the contemplated locations are on the Amalfi Coast. Positano is, but not convenient for all of the sites that you want to see. Sorrento would be the best choice given all of the day trips you would like to make.
Sorrento books up six and more months on advance in season, so your budget may go farther in Vico. Some cheaper places in Sorrento are well out of town and rn a shuttle. But use Google Maps to see how long the walk to the train is from a lodging. Every (May-September) morning at the Sorrento Circumvesuviana station curb, the line for the bus to Positano/Amalfi is longer than will fit on the next bus. FYI.
We drove by Vico Equense a year ago March while riding the Curreri Viaggi bus from Sorrento station to Naples Capodichino airport, and it seemed like no lodging was near the Vico CV train station, maybe a walk-up or two on the main drag the bus took. Everything else appeared to be up or down from the road. So if you decide to stay there, find out how far you'll be from the station.
That being said, it looked absolutely idyllic, probably the best views on the north coast of the peninsula. I've posted that I may stay there next trip in the vicinity.
Vico's location is good for daytrips to Naples, Pompei, Ercolano & Sorrento, a little farther to Positano & Capri, and a P.I.T.A. trip to Amalfi-town, Salerno or Paestum. Enjoy your planning!
I agree, Sorrento or Vico would probably be the best choice given your interests, no need to split them up. I haven’t stayed in Vico, but it’s certainly accessible to the Circumvesuviana. I wouldn’t call Sorrento “bustling” by any measure though. It’s an attractive place to stay, with a good selection of restaurants that Vico may lack. Also, the ferry connections make it very convenient, though tacking on a quick train to/from Vico isn’t bad either.
If they’re running, I recommend taking ferries whenever possible. They are the most comfortable mode of transport with great views.
