Staying near Roma Termini?

Hello,
I'm sure this questions must have been answered many time before, but I need to finalize my hotel bookings this weekend, hence would appreciate the advice.
I will be spending 3 nights in Rome as a solo female traveller during the last week of April. My plan is to make day trip to the Vatican and walk the streets of Rome the rest of the time. Since my trip dates are pretty close, available accommodation prices are higher near the key tourist spots like the Trevi Fountain, etc. but I came across a decently priced (and has good reviews) hotel a block away from the Roma Termini station. Is it ok to use this area as a base? I don't plan on staying out too late in the night and the station seems like a perfect launch pad to start and end the day!
please advise!

Vivien,

YES, it's absolutely fine to use the Termini area as a "home base", as that's what I usually do. I've never had any problems there. It would help if you could indicate the name of the hotel, as one of the other forum members may have experience with that property.

That is our preferred area when in Rome. We prefer Hotel Sonya across from Opera House. And have also stayed in Hotel Aberbeen - a little further from Termini, and if just passing through for one night have used Hotel Contilla a block south of Termini and across from a laundry. The other two have great breakfast. The Contilla breakfast is so - so. The area has a lot of restaurants, hotels, and lots of people moving around. Streets are very busy.

Thank you Ken and Frank.
I will have 2 different stays in Rome...one for three nights, then off to Tuscany only to be back for a night before catching a 9am flight from FCO.
I was exploring staying at "The beehive" which is decent and not very expensive but I found some other options on Airbnb about ~500m from the termini station for the 3 nights... while I have yet to confirm that stay.. I am looking to confirm staying at the Beehive only for the one night which would be a perfect location to catch the early morning train to FCO.

Frank.. appreciate your recommendations on hotel Sonya, The Aberdeen and Hotel Contilla. Looking into it.

Vivien,

I concur with Frank as I typically stay at either Hotel Sonya or Hotel Aberdeen also.

Vivien, a good (single) friend of mine always stays near Termini and has never had a problem. We've stayed a few blocks away and didn't have any issues either so don't worry; you'll be fine.

I stayed as a solo female near Termini last fall and liked it very much. I found it convenient for walking to the sights I wanted to see, and I never felt uncomfortable there. I even walked back to my hotel 2 nights around 9pm when it was already dark and I felt safe enough. There were plenty of other people walking around the area. When walking back after dark, I just stayed alert to my surroundings and stuck to main streets where there were other people out walking.

Thank you Karen... I don't plan on staying out later than 9pm, but glad to hear you found it safe after dark. I agree- being vigilant would be of utter importance especially when its dark.

Vivien,

If you're walking along the main streets, I don't think you'll feel unsafe even at 9 pm. Most of the restaurants and sidewalk cafés are bustling at that time of night which is also true in many parts of Rome. There's always lots of activity in the evenings.

I have walked through the centro storico alone at all hours of the day and night, I don't remember any street void of people, even at 4am.

It's a great place to stay! I stayed at the Hotel Taormina which is a few blocks south of the Termini Station a right next to the Metro. It was a 3-star hotel and nothing fancy, but we weren't in the room much anyway! Staying next to a Metro or Termini made getting around by public transportation very easy!

Vivien,

I also have stayed several time at Hotel Aberdeen. I think it is a great, safe location. Easy walk to Termini and bus terminal. The rooms are very clea and the breakfast is good. The staff is helpful and pleasant.
Have a great time

"I don't plan on staying out later than 9pm"

But you should. You see, dinner for Romans starts at 8-8:30 PM, and takes quite a while (meals in Italy are not rushed). Then, after dinner everyone (Romans as well as tourists) walks around the center - and so should you. It's all lit up and quite beautiful, and with the crowds walking around it's very safe. So, plan to get back to your hotel 10-11 PM, even if you don't plan on any "nightlife" after dinner.

Got it Harold! :) I am going to have to play the late nights by ear... but appreciate the suggestion and don't want to miss out when there is no concern.

I just returned from Rome with my 16 yo daughter. We stayed next to Termini since we were planning two day trips into Pompeii and Florence. It was so nice to be able to get up at 5:30 to make a 6am train! We walked everywhere from our hostel. We took the metro to the Vatican one day then walked back stopping at all the sights along the way. We got in each night around 11pm - 12am and never felt unsafe.

What I like about staying near Termini is the abundance of cheap eateries at the train station.
