Hotels seem to be scarce and/or very expensive in Bologna area the end of September. Does anyone know if this is normal or if there is a convention or special event then?

I've had trouble finding reasonably-priced accommodations in Bologna in the (distant) past. In 2015 I scheduled myself there over a weekend, and that worked out better. I'm thinking it's a major business city. Or there could, indeed, be a special event going on.

There is an International Water Festival from the 14th to 17th, Race for the Cure the 22-24 and followed by Design Week 26-30. You can see events on this website under the LIVE heading.

If you go during the Design Week, you are not going to find a lot of rooms for sure.
Everybody and their mother involved in home design and furnishings will be in Bologna.
It's a good time to go if you plan to redo your bathroom.
