Hi,
I am looking at potentially using Volterra as a base for a few nights. Is it better to stay in town or outside the city walls?
Has anyone stayed at Hotel San Lino or Hotel Volterra In?
Thanks,
Billy

If you have a car you won’t be allowed to drive inside the walls. The historical center is off limits to non residents’ cars.
Volterra is beautiful, however it is not best suited as a base for day trips, as it is a bit of a drive on curvy roads to reach most other towns and in most Tuscan roads you won’t be able to drive much above 40 km/h (25 mph), so the drive may take longer than it may appear on a map.
If you plan to take day trips from there, and know where you plan to visit, try to plot those drives on GoogleMaps and see how long it takes from Volterra, so that you get an idea if you wouldn’t mind those drives. If you plan to use buses, then Volterra is definitely not a great choice for a base.
If you plan to use buses and stay put in town during your stay then I would try to secure accommodations in the historical center inside the city walls.
