My wife and I are going to Venice, and someone recommended that we stay in the Jewish Ghetto because, besides being interesting, it is a relatively quiet neighborhood that is not very far from the main Venice attractions. Is this a reasonable recommendation? If so, what would be good places to stay in the Ghetto, in the general range of $130 to $200 a night? Thanks for any advice.
I stayed at Hotel San Marcuolo, about 50 meters from the vaporetto stop of the same name. It may be technically outside the ghetto but it's a quick stroll to the synagogue and central neighborhood. There's also an elevator in the hotel. Breakfast is included, I paid €430 for a double for three nights in early May.
The Ghetto area is indeed very quiet, as it is in the residential area of Cannareggio, with some nice broad streets free of crowds. It is quite close to the train station, but about as far as you can get from Piazza San Marco, which is the center of the major tourist sights. ( which is why that area is always choked with tourists).
But of course one can get anywhere in Venice fairly quickly by vaporetto. Or to really get the most out of your Venice visit, everywhere as the whole city is amazing.
A more central location, still away from the San Marco crowds, but with more of the "feel" of Venice, would be Castello or Dorsoduro.
Castello would certainly be quiet, but it's not at all what I would call central. Just look at a map. Dorsoduro (as mentioned) and also San Polo are very central. As for quiet, as long as you get a "block" or two away from the main pedestrian thoroughfares, it will be quiet. And with the exception of some of the piazzas, Venice is almost eerily quiet at night.
I was thinking of the western part of Castello, near Rialto bridge but a few blocks away. We spent a month in an apartment near there and the location was perfect for walking in every direction. San Polo is wonderful for walking too. We also like Dorsoduro for the neighborhood vibe but it is not as central.
I haven't stayed there for a long time, but it's an excellent choice. Short distance from the station, very residential and above all quiet, which is always a plus when you are visiting a Disney-like theme park on a lagoon. Venice is very small therefore wherever you are you are not far from anything. Just walk or take a vaporetto and you will be anywhere in 20 minutes or less.
Are you departing Venice by plane? If yes, do you have a flight that departs before 8:00am? Many do. If yes, consider your hotel carefully and make sure that it's near the vaporetto stops that can get you to the Piazzale Roma for the bus to the airport. Please disregard if you are departing Venice by Train or other method.
Wonderful idea! We stayed very close to the Ghetto in this area, the Cannaregio, and loved it. There is actually a great grocery store on the main drag very near the Jewish area. I took a tour of the three synegogues and loved it. Great cafe/pastry shop right in the ghetto.
