We are planning on staying for 5 days in Venice this October and are looking at air b&b's. We definitely want to stay away from the crowds and have read that the Cannaregio and Dorsorduo areas are quiet and authentic neighborhoods. Does anyone have experience and/or preferences for either of these neighborhoods? We appreciate being in an area that have non- touristy restaurants and cafes nearby. TIA
We just returned from Venice and stayed in the Cannaregio area for the third time, so I highly recommend the area.
Have a great trip!
Those are both good areas for folks staying long enough they don't need or want lodging near San Marco. The precise location within the sestiere is significant. Ideally, you'd like to be not too long a walk from the nearest vaporetto stop and not need to cross many bridges to get there. It's a plus to be close to a bridge across the Grand Canal, so you don't have to depend so much on vaporettos, and that's more likely to happen if you're in Dorsoduro. You'll probably appreciate being close to one of Venice's small supermarkets, especially if your Airbnb has kitchen facilities; you can find those by zooming in on Google Maps. The Despar Teatro Italia market in Cannaregio is especially attractive.
Beyond those general considerations, the particular sights you want to see might suggest one area would be more convenient than the other purely from the standpoint of travel time. The Guggenheim and the Accademia are both in Dorsoduro. Much of Cannaregio is better positioned for those who anticipate making multiple trips to Murano, Burano and Torcello--no doubt an unlikely plan for the typical tourist.
We liked San Polo a lot and stayed there three times for extended visits. Felt “local-ish” as we were on a calle that was not a major passageway for the crowds. San Polo is convenient to the Rialto bridge as well as a couple of vaporetto stops.
As you identify specific properties, you can post links here for those of us with experience to review with an eye toward convenience and crowds.
Try around Campo San. Barnaba, Dorsoduro.
I agree with Aussie's recommendation. That is also close to Campo Santa Margherita, a nice spot to have an aperitivo and snacks or a light meal.
Thank you everyone for your quick responses! Some really good tips. As we narrow down our search I might post a few options for anyone to review and comment.
Update: Here is one which just reserved for the time being. Great views. In the Dorsorduro area. What do you think?

Wow! And a view. It looks really nice to me and if it is $161/night, that’s a great price for Venice.
I think that will be a relatively non-touristy part of Venice, but it's some distance from nearly all the major tourist sights. That won't matter if you like to walk and aren't done in by the bridges.
Have you checked with the host on how many stairs you'll need to climb to reach the apartment?
I believe the nearest supermarkets will be the Conad near Campo Santa Margherita and the Coop over near the Piazzale Roma "D" vaporetto stop. I think that Coop is one of the city's largest markets.
For those more knowledgeable than I am about Venice who want to weigh in, the location seems to be very near Santa Croce, close to the shop Il Grifone.
Looks like a fine location. As acraven mentioned, I would inquire about stairs.
We stayed very close to there, about 50 metres away on Fond Gaffaro. Worked well for us, we stayed for about a month.
Only 2 flights of stairs! We were prepared for stairs so I feel like only 2 flights in a deal! Also, prepared to walk in order to be away from crowds however it would be nice to not be too far away but everything has it's trade offs.
however it would be nice to not be too far away
Nothing is very far away in Venice. It really is compact. A vaporetto pass is a good idea, though.
i just stayed in guidecca for 7 days at an airbnb. right across from venice but feels a world away. quite, low stress but well connected to all the excitement! just jump on a vaporetto at all hours of the day or night. there are a few restaurants on the venice side and at least 1 supermarket that i frequented.

We’re staying here for 4 nights next month.
This is the second time we’ve stayed in this area. Very quiet with great restaurants nearby.
Hi, I have stayed in this lovely Dorsorduro apartment and very much recommend it. The location is great - away from the crowds but everything you will need close by. My best memory is of the gondoliers singing as they travel below the windows. Sabastiano is so helpful and very easy to deal with. Enjoy.
