Staying in Venice Dorsoduro area-pros/cons

What are the pros and cons of staying in hotel in this area of Venice?

I stayed in this area last year and loved it. It's easy walking distance to San Maros Square and other sights and is well serviced on the vaporetto line. I liked it as it wasn't quite as busy as around the Square and the restaurants didn't seem quite as expensive. Have you any particular hotels in mind?

Yes, we are booked at Tiziano. It got pretty good reviews on tripadvisor. Are you familiar with it?

I like Dorsoduro. It has more of a neighborhood feel and is away from the hustle and bustle of San Marco. A bit more laid back, but still lots of local attractions and restaurants. It encompasses a sizeable area and different sections have different feels. Which hotel were you interested in?

I stayed in this area with a RS tour. Quiet in the evenings, more locals, cheaper food. Easy access to public transport - never more than 10 minutes away from anything "big". Great little shops between the Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim. I had a really magic moment in the Campo San Barnaba, having a pre-dinner glass of wine in twilight, people watching as locals headed home. A lovely older woman above me was watching the action too, from her apartment above the square. It was dreamy and magical and just what I thought Venice would be like. Goosebumps just thinking about it.

Hi Lisa, I don't know your hotel but I looked at it on Trip advisor and it's location on Google Maps and it looks good. I stayed further across towards the Accademia. I think you'll be happy there. I ate at a restaurant on the promonade along the main canal and had a really nice meal that wasn't expensive in comparison to restaurants in the more popular parts of Venice. Can't remember the name but there are heaps of them so just wander along and go into one that you like the look of. I'm sure you'll have a great time. I did enjoy being away from the busier parts at night I must admit.

Thanks all, I am so glad I went with my gut on this one, I don't think we will regret it. We never stay in our hotel much anyway!! The hotel sounds difficult to find the first time, so I have several different reviewers directions to go by, and feel confident we shall get there ok from train station.
