Staying in Venice

Any one have suggestions for an small, historic place to stay near the Rialto Bridge?

Have heard that many business and restaurants in various cities/towns in Italy close during the summer - sometimes up to a week or two. Should that be a concern the end of August into September?

Pensione Guerrato is near the Rialto. Wherever you stay, make sure they have AC that you can turn on during the day if needed. Everything in Venice will be open.

I second Pension Guerrato. The location is great, they have AC, and the breakfast is nice.

I requested info on a booking for Sept 1-4 at Pensione Guerrato and was told there was no availability for those days, in case any of those days are part of your plan. I was seeking a single, and that might have played a role in the "no vacancy" reply.

Shops and restaurants close in big cities and in the periferic districts, where middle-class Italians actually live and where tourism is a marginal source of revenues.

Central Venice is basically a theme park. Like seaside villages, mountain hamlets and art cities if they closed in August, when most italians take their vacations, they'd lose a big % of their yearly incomes.

If you read it on your guide, maybe you should get a better one.

Pensione Guerrato is a favorite place to stay for Rick Steves tours so the availability may not always be great. I booked a room for late June just recently, and it was the last one. Book as far ahead of time as possible.
