Staying in Venice

My husband and I are staying in Umbria and would like to see Venice. Do you suggest taking the train there and staying overnight, or is a day enough to see the major sites (Doge's Palace, San Marco's Square, gondola ride)? Thank you.

Mary, If at all possible, spend at least two days there more if it will work into your schedule. TC

You have to spend at least one night. More if possible.

Venice is soooo beautiful at night after the tourist hordes have left - def spend the night. Lines can be long for Doges (we stood for an hour our 1st visit - had a museum pass the 2nd time and skipped the line)...but you can certainly do those things if you get there early enough...but really, stay the night and wander the canals and alleys - you will fall in LOVE!
