We are traveling through Italy in May with our two daughters (ages 3 and 5) and want to stay in a village/town in Umbria or Tuscany for 5-7 days. We want to explore our "home base" as well as the countryside around us. Any suggestions on a place that would give us a countryside/village experience that would be appropriate with children?

I'd recommend a centrally located agriturismo, such as Cretaiole in Pienza. Someplace with animals and room for the kids to explore (safely).

Agriturismo LaFornace is just outside of Assisi. Stayed here in 2007, lovely grounds, swimming pool. www.lafornace.com
