Staying in Sorrento - Wanting to do the Amalfi Coast

Hi - We are staying in Sorrento and we want to do the Amalfi Coast. We want to have lunch in Positano (50 minutes away) should we continue down to Amalfi (another 50 minutes away) or to Salerno (another 3 hours away)? We have heard how beautiful it is, but how far do you need to travel. Is it all the same after Positano? We are thinking about getting a driver or take the bus and take the ferry back. Looking for suggestions and recommendations.

Thanks,
Robert

I think Rick Steves' book does a great job of laying out the A.C and what to see. If you lunch in Positano you may never get any farther along the coast. :-)

Ravello, above Amalfi town, is fabulous with two terrific historic villas to tour and amazing views. I would skip the Amalfi to Salerno section and concentrate on Sorrento-Amalfi-Sorrento with stops in Positano and Ravello. A private driver would help you make the most of your time.

If you decide not to hire a driver in Sorrento, the bus down and the ferry back is a good idea.

Consider Paestum - a long daytrip but beautiful Greek temes, good small museum and a beach. The museum is closed on Monday.

We were very glad to have a driver, so we skipped the parking difficulties and the crowded busses. I know that not everyone can afford a car and driver. (But if you are content with Positano, you can book 4 hours.)

It's not useful to say "its all the same after Positano." Amalfi and Ravelllo have their own charms. It's a question of whether you want to know as much as you possibly can about the Amalfi coast, or whether the single most important spot is enough of a sample. I would not go to Salerno unless you are going to Paestum too. The views from the car are a major factor in the value of having someone else drive you - and the views aren't that different after Positano.

I also have to consider Rick's statement that it's easier to take the bus home from Amalfi than it is to get on the return bus in Positano! But I have no personal experience with that-except seeing the 11AM line for the bus in Sorrento!
