Looking for advice for those who have stayed in Santa Margherita and where they stayed. Am planning a trip for May 2011 and also want to visit Cinque Terre and Porto Fino. Will be using Santa Margaherita as our homebase for three nights. What have others done or recommend?

We only daytripped to Santa Margherita. But check out Dal Baffo Ristorante Pizzeria. We had lunch here and it was really good. Only locals in this place. Nicely cooked seafood and reasonably priced. It's located a few blocks from the waterfront on Corso Matteotti, 56-58.

One of our favorite places in Italy. We like to walk to Portofino and ferry back. The beaches are rocky and you can find old pieces of colorful tile softened by the sea. I'm not sure that you'll have swimsuit weather. We've daytripped to CT. Love the size and ambience of SM with both yachts and fish markets.
