Middle aged women staying in Rome the month of May. We are planning on taking day trips around the city and exploring outside of the city on 1-2 day trips. We are not planning on renting a car so being close to public transportation is a must. What are the best areas to focus our apartment search?
Prati is the area near the Vatican and is very convenient for transportation: trams, buses and the Metro all serve the area. It is also feasible to walk to the Piazza Navona area from the nearer parts of Prati. It's very residential so fairly serene at night. Monti is also convenient and interesting to stay in.
You might check Sabbatical Homes for apartments. They tend to be less expensive than the usual VRBO or other vacation rental.
A second vote for the Prati.
I once had an apartment overlooking the Castel Sant'Angelo and loved it. Convenient to everything.
