Staying in Rome - Day trip to the beach at Santa Marinella

My husband and I are travelling to Italy at the end of July. We have two days in Rome where we have nothing planned yet. I have thought about trying to plan a day trip to the beach. I have read Santa Marinella is fairly easy to get to (we are staying near Termini). It would be a week day (either Thursday or Friday). Any advice on the beach itself or the journey to get there? I have read parts of the beach are free and others you must pay to use. Is it worth the trip? Thanks!

Definitely worth the trip! Water is beautiful! It was great people watching. And it was a nice break from the heat and activity of Rome. And this coming from a person who loves Rome and lives in a big city.

The train ride is around 40 minutes and they leave very frequently. Station name is S. Marinella. When you arrive, the beach is right down the street. It was easy to figure out what part of the beach was free and what wasn't. We stayed on the free part but now I would be willing to pay extra to have a chair and an umbrella.

From what I understand, this is a popular weekend spot for those who live in Rome so Thursday would be better than Friday. The earlier in the day you go, the more choice you have of where you sit. We went mid week in May and arrived around 11. Around 3 (end of the school day maybe?) the beach definitely became more crowded with what seemed like local familes and groups of teenagers.

We did not come prepared with towels and snacks because the day trip was sort of last minute. We ended up buying towels from a shop right by the train station and paid a premium price. Upim (in Termini) probably has cheaper towels. And I would have brought more food/drinks to picnic. But there were many places to eat a long the beach.

Enjoy your trip!
