Staying in Rome - Campo de Fiore vs. Spanish Steps in September

I am looking to book a place to stay in Rome in September. I am looking at places near Campo de Fiore or the Spanish Steps and would love opinions on which neighborhood might be a good fit. I will be spending my time seeing most of the historical sites during the day, probably not shopping much and want to have access to friendly nightlife (wine bars, restaurants, etc.) I'm female, in my late 30's...and will be traveling alone.

Would love some opinions! Thanks!

Hi Alisea -
You'll probably get votes for either but my own of the two would be Campo de Fiore. I like that corner of Rome a lot. The one caveat will be the lack of metro service in that area (served by buses - which we never use) but you'll be just a nice stroll away from a lot of attractions. September is a great month to go!

It is Campo dei Fiori, by the way. The bus service is terrific on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, and the Colosseo is maybe a 20-25 minute walk one way, while St. Peter's is 20-25 minutes the other direction on foot. HOWEVER the campo itself can be a nuthouse at night with drunken American, Canadian, British and Australian young people. There are a couple of good wine bars not far away.

The area around the Pantheon is not far from Piazza Campo dei Fiori, and seems a little quieter at night.

Sometimes I "stalk" Rome by using skylinewebcams.com; they have cameras at the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, and other places in Rome. If you check around midnight Rome time, you'll see how busy these places are. No webcam in Piazza Campo dei Fiori, however. Note the 6-hour time difference.

Here's another vote for Trastevere, in the area around Piazza Sydney Sonnino, either to the west or east.
